Nintendo's new 3DS: Gaming is just the beginning

(CNN) -- Nintendo 3DS, a glasses-free 3-D handheld video game system, arrives March 27 for $249.99.
Nintendo hopes it will make the strongest case yet for 3-D special effects affordability and relevance.
But calling it a gaming console may be the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American public.
Gaming, it turns out, might be among the least of the system's capabilities.
The device will also deliver an array of other fully-connected entertainment experiences, according to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime at the 2011 Game Developers Conference.
From 3-D movies to TV shows, digital music to augmented reality applications, the company is clearly assigning tremendous importance to non-gaming applications.
Though they won't say it directly, Nintendo clearly plans to make the system a Trojan horse for the larger world of 3-D multimedia. This should scare the competition.
It's an infinitely more practical, and reasonably priced, 3-D argument than a $1500+ HDTV that tethers you to your couch.
If Nintendo can make this portable device as common and trusted for 3-D entertainment as smartphones are for e-mail or Web surfing, it may single-handedly deliver the breakthrough that carries this technology to mainstream prominence.
Yes, the system will play 3-D versions of premium game franchises like "Street Fighter" and "The Legend of Zelda," says Fils-Aime. Yes, in the wake of increasing pressure from tens of thousands of readily available free and 99-cent apps, it will redouble efforts to justify $39.99 average software prices by offering "premium experiences you can't get anywhere else."
But with free AT&T WiFi hotspot availability, Netflix movie streaming and the ability to create, download and physically interact with 3-D content among its arsenal of tricks, the company may have yet to play its trump card.
The system lacks 3G/4G high-speed connectivity, and Nintendo is known for ardently policing material licensed for sale or distribution -- virtually or otherwise -- for its consoles.
But by letting users view, download and generate a variety of 3-D material, the system could prove to be the most cost-effective and practical on-demand 3-D content portal on the market.
Should Nintendo decide to enable sharing of user-generated content or enable the three-camera device for high-speed cellular connectivity and casual videoconferencing, the scope of this potential power play becomes even larger.
While a dedicated stand-alone gaming system such as the Nintendo 3DS can't rival smartphones or tablet PCs for sheer ubiquity, consider this:

Wearable Scanner Opens New Frontier in Neuroscience

A tiny wearable scanner has been used to track chemical activity in the brains of unrestrained animals for the first time. By revealing neurological circuitry as the subjects perform normal tasks, researchers say, the technology could greatly broaden the understanding of learning, addiction, depression, and other conditions.
The device was designed to be used with rats—the main animal model used by behavioral neuroscientists. But the researchers who developed the device, at Brookhaven National Laboratory, say it would be straightforward to engineer a similar device for people.
Positron emission tomography, or PET, is already broadly used in neuroscience research and in clinical treatment. It allows researchers to track the location of radioactively labeled neurotransmitters (the chemicals that carry signals between neurons) or drugs within the brain. Images of the way neurotransmitters and drugs move through the brain can reveal the processes that underpin normal behavior such as learning as well as pathologies including addiction. PET has been used to map drug-binding sites in the brains of addicts and healthy people, and to study how those sites change over time and with therapy.
A conventional PET scanner is so large that these studies have to be performed with the subject lying inside a large tube. Large photomultiplier tubes amplify signals from gamma rays emitted by labeled chemicals in the brain. The signals then pass through a desk-sized rack of electronics that process them and map them to a particular region of the brain. To get good readings during animal studies, the subjects are typically anaesthetized or restrained. What's being measured is not normal waking behavior.

"We have very limited data about what brains do in the real world," says Paul Glimcher, professor of neuroscience, economics, and psychology at New York University. Glimcher was not involved with the work.
The new portable scanner is designed to provide the same information about brain chemistry while an animal behaves naturally. It is small and lightweight enough that a rat can carry it around on its head. "[The rat] can move freely, interact with other animals, and at the same time we can make a 3-D map of, for example, dopamine receptors throughout the brain," says David Schlyer, a senior scientist at Brookhaven who led the work.
Schlyer's group worked for years to engineer a miniature PET scanner that could be worn by a moving subject. The device consists of a metal ring hanging from a support structure that helps support its weight and allows the rat to move around. The rat's head goes inside the ring, which contains both detectors and electronics.
The key to miniaturizing the device, Schlyer says, was integrating all the electronics for each detector in the ring on a single, specialized chip. An avalanche photodiode also replaces the large photomultiplier tubes of conventional PET, amplifying the signals emitted by the labeled chemicals in the brain. "The rats take about an hour to acclimate, then begin behaving normally," says Schlyer. The Brookhaven device is described this week in the journal Nature Methods.

Automotive X-Prize Winners Share $10 Million For 100 MPG Car Designs

Automotive X prize can be said to be defined as a set of events, prize and competitions that are being organized by X prize foundations. These events and competitions are held to inspire all efficient and new generation vehicles that help in breaking America’s addiction towards oil and steam. These may affect the changing climate. One of the car was two-seater Li-on’s WAVE II EV. Other car that won was Team X Tracer Switzerland’s E tracer. This was an awesome electric two wheeler car that was enclosed with motorcycle. It consisted of auto deploying out trigger wheels in it. This car managed to get 205.3 MPGe. It also did 1-60 just under seven seconds. There is one constraint and that is none of them is good from safety point. You may also not find them with any of the dealers.

The main motive with each of these competition remains to build a vehicle that is race super efficient. It must be able to achieve 100 MPGe and must produce less than 200 grams/mile well to wheel Carbon dioxide emission. These may be manufactured for mass production. Under these competitions, there are two main classes of vehicles and those are mainstream and alternative. The mainstream vehicle is to be given $5 million prize while the alternative class have $2.5 million prize with each vehicle. These $2.5 million prize for alternative class is for side by side seating and tandem seating too.

All these had been started to let the students learn about new technologies and methods to develop some of the finest vehicles and electric vehicles that are very light weight and work on electricity medium. These events are designed to let the student come up with their own technology built electric car that are fuel efficient climate change, energy efficient etc. All kinds of science, technology, fashion and fundamentals must be behind the development o such electric cars. These very light cars behave as etracer in competition. X foundation began its development work in 2005 and by end of 2009 it had 111 teams participating in it. HTC’s Facebook button is the Start of Something Big

Yesterday HTC announced two new phones the ChaCha and the Salsa. Each included a new and unique implementation with the social networking giant Facebook. As I listened to HTC CMO John Wang talk about how deeply they integrated the Facebook experience into these devices I became convinced they are on to something.


HTC, in my opinion, is in the top tier of companies that are innovating within the mobile sector. The level of thought they put into the experience consumers have with their phones is impressive and refreshing. This thinking is what led them to take another step forward and add deep Facebook integration into two of their latest devices.
Our Social Fabric
Like mobile phones, Facebook is now so deeply woven into our social fabric that it is hard to imagine a world without it. Facebook has more than 500 million active global users, 200 million of which are also actively using Facebook on mobile devices. People that use Facebook on mobile devices are twice as active as non-mobile users. From that perspective it makes complete “Sense” that HTC would integrate a service like Facebook so deeply into their mobile phone experience.
Telephony brought a paradigm shift in the way we communicate as a human race and Facebook again brought a paradigm shift in the way the Internet can be used to connect the human race. Communicating and connecting is at the core of our needs and the innovations in mobile computing continue to advance and enhance those needs.
Facebook is to Consumers what Email is to the Enterprise
If you are like me and e-mail is at the center of how you work you will relate to this analogy. I recall my first job at Cypress Semiconductor and getting set up with corporate e-mail for the first time. After about the first week I was addicted since the core of my job relied on being able to communicate with all who were tasked with my project. My email experience again changed drastically the first time I was set up with a mobile device that was connected to my work email allowing me to get email anywhere and any time.
As email is at the core of the fabric of how enterprises work so is Facebook becoming the center of how consumers connect. This is why mobile Facebook users are more active than non-mobile users. What makes the ChaCha and Salsa unique is not that they are just two new devices that allow you access to Facebook while mobile but that Facebook is an active part of the entire device experience.
The hardware and software created on these devices assume you want to do more than access the mobile version of Facebook on your device. These devices have what I would call an intelligent Facebook integration.
Consumers who use either of these devices, I feel, will have as profound a moment with this Facebook integration as many of us did the first time we got access to wireless email. If mobile Facebook users are twice as active now than non-mobile users, I would fully expect those consumers who use the ChaCha and Salsa to be even more active mobile Facebook users.
HTC may have very well just set a new bar on how consumers will begin to think about how their mobile device fits into their life. These two new devices present more than just a phone with access to apps and the mobile web. They represent what may be the start of a true mobile social experience.

2010 saw an explosion of 3-D products for consumers and also the arrival of augmented reality as a mainstream technology. In both areas, however, only some commercial implementations proved ready for prime time.
3-D TVs, Cameras, and Camcorders Galore
3-D was a hot topic at the start of the year, partly because of the 3-D blockbuster movie Avatar, which came out last December. Many predicted that 3-D technology would move quickly from the movie theater into the home, and major electronics companies including Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Sony, Philips, and Toshiba announced plans to release 3-D televisions and Blu-ray players (Home 3-D: Here, or Hype? and Here Come the High-Definition 3-D TVs). But obstacles—particularly the need to wear 3-D glasses costing upwards of $100 per pair and the limited amount of 3-D content available to watch (a handful of DVDs and few TV transmissions)—have prevented 3-D TVs from becoming wildly popular, at least for now (Will 3-D Make the Jump from Theater to Living Room?).
In an effort to make the technology more enticing, some companies are developing glasses-free 3-D displays. Each lens in a pair of 3-D glasses filters a different image, which fools the brain into responding as if to a three-dimensional image. To ditch the glasses, the display has to produce alternating images very rapidly, and the user has to sit in just the right place relative to the screen. While most people would prefer not to have to wear 3-D glasses, few will be happy with this constraint. Fortunately, Microsoft has figured out a way around the problem—a screen that detects the viewer's position and shows different images to each eye. Although it's still in the research stages, the technology will allow one or two people to see a 3-D image on a screen, regardless of where in the room they are sitting (3-D Without the Glasses).

Getting More Value from Cell-Phone Data

Last month, attendees at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, pulled out their smart phones. Each attendee watched as the gadget displayed an analysis of his or her mental state—relative to others in the room—gleaned from data gathered by the phone itself.
A special program, which they'd agreed to install earlier in the conference, mined accelerometer data to tell when the phone had been moved, counted time spent on e-mail, and noted how long they'd kept the phone unlocked, and where and when they connected to Wi-Fi. "We could point out 'you're not very active right now,' or 'you're not paying attention to this lecture,' or 'you're jet lagged,'" Alex "Sandy" Pentland, the professor of media arts and sciences at MIT who developed the program, told the audience.
In the view of researchers like Pentland, the proliferation of smart phones—and our attachment to them—presents a prime opportunity to measure unseen behaviors and social interactions and use new algorithms to mine the value of this data. He calls this "reality mining," and says it can make companies more innovative and deliver new marketing insights.
Some initial applications of cell-phone data have already been commercialized. For example, Sense Networks, a startup cofounded by Pentland, uses the ever-growing streams of real-time location information from cell phones and navigation devices—combined with historical research on consumer behavior—to predict the purchasing intentions of individuals across cities. Data on locations visited can indicate whether a person is going out for drinks or spending the day car-shopping.

The Sense Networks algorithms also continually update their analysis of anonymous cell-phone data to predict for clients whether the foot traffic in their neighborhood is, say, currently made up of business travelers or young adults out on the town. It looks at what kinds of locations they are visiting—such as a conference hall, rock club, or a hotel—and what times they are visiting them.

But Pentland sees many more commercial possibilities for cell-phone data. In a 2009 campus experiment, Pentland and a grad student used text-messaging and call logs, e-mail activity, GPS, and Bluetooth data from student volunteers' cell phones to track informal social influence. Mining cell-phone data—and then surveying the students about what they were doing to create models that can help interpret future cell-phone data sets—allowed Pentland to track how students influenced each other's political opinions, eating habits, or even their illnesses.
Pentland is known for developing a gadget called "sociometer" in the late 1990s. That's a device worn around the neck that measures unspoken communication: a Bluetooth radio detects other nearby sociometers; infrared sensors detect face-to-face conversations; and a microphone picks up changes in intonation that can reveal who is the most influential speaker in a conversation. 

HP's Risky Triple Play

Yesterday, HP announced its first three products using WebOS, the operating system for mobile devices that was its main prize for acquiring Palm in July of last year. HP is already known for printers, PCs, and laptops, but the new products—a tablet, an updated smart phone, and a new super-small smart phone—highlighted a new strategy for the company.
The Touchpad tablet, Pre 3 smart phone, and Veer mini smart phone, show WebOS in three different sizes. By announcing them together, HP hopes to emphasize both the flexibility of the operating system and how well WebOS can work for a user who owns multiple devices running it. It also hopes to spur developers to create apps for the platform. However, this may still not be enough to capture a market that's dominated by other big companies such as Apple and Google.
Palm's WebOS operating system was the ailing company's last-ditch effort to reclaim the market it once dominated with its popular PDA. The WebOS operating system uses Web technologies familiar to developers, such as HTML and JavaScript, instead of Objective C, the specialized language used to program apps for Apple's iPhone. The Palm Pre, which was the first device to feature the operating system, was praised for its design when released in June 2009, but it was a flop in the market, leading to HP's acquisition of Palm.
The acquisition of Palm, and the launch of these three devices, is an important move for HP, the world's largest personal-computer maker. The market is shifting away from desktop and laptop computers toward increasingly powerful smart phones and tablet computers. But the strategy HP has chosen is risky. It aims to innovate its way to a successful position in this emerging market, which is dominated by Apple with the iPhone and iPad, and by other hardware companies that use Google's free Android OS.

Unravel the myth behind Skype 5.0, Adds Facebook And Videoconferencing Features

We all know about Skype as we all love to make free calls through it. Skype is one of the biggest software applications that offer voice calls over the internet. Skype was released in the year 2003 and has embarked its name in the software industry. Skype usually uses non VoIP service as it doesn’t runs on servers. Lot of talks rather rumors are hovering over the latest version of the Skype software. The Skype 5.0 is the newest version, which is only for windows. There was a lot of rumor and expectation surrounding the new edition of the software so thought to take a look at it.

If you are a devotee of the Skype service then you must have tired to have a glimpse of the new version. The new version has radically squeezed lots of elements in the new Skype.  And I have seen quotation such as “the Facebook phone”, but that is not the fact. It is not the Facebook phone. It is the new version of the Skype includes a new feature which is a Facebook tab. It has taken full advantage of the utility of Facebook.  It is also free to download for the entire basic feature.

It has still got the same look and feel and the visible transition is the inclusion of photos in the contact list and the Facebook tab. Installation process remains the same, there is no change or uniqueness on that part. When you start the Skype and logs on to the Facebook tab, it automatically updates the RSS feeds and also adds the Skype calls or SMS buttons besides the contact that are on Skype or next to those who have their contact details synchronized with Skype. You can also view your Phonebook of Facebook that normally displays the contact details which are available on Facebook. Strangely, it does not show the Skype buttons in that tab. That was one odd thing about the new version.

Things remained unaltered

And yes this version also includes the 10-way video call feature. This has become the USP of Skype as it allows many video conferences at the same time. Another feature that remains the same is the automatic call recovery that outstandingly rejoins the missed calls which has added another trademark to the brand.  But as a user you have to wait for the mobile version of the Skype. It seems it needs more time to appear on every cell phone.

The verdict

Skype still retains its place as the finest non-VoIP voice over internet software. With its old USP of multiple video conferences at a same time remains unhindered and still works at a good rate. Other than that everything is still same. The look, working almost everything is same apart from the inclusion of photos nest to e very contact.

Most talked about feature, which is the new in the tally is the Facebook tab. Skype has utilized the popularity of the social networking giants. It adds another flavor to our utility. With frequent RSS feed updates, I believe it is a good tiny version of your Facebook. If you want to use Skype and Facebook at the same time you can use the Skype 5.0. I think, it is now available over the net, so download it and analyze it yourself.  As of me, I love the idea of Skype I’ll give it 8.5 out of 10. Way to go Skype!

Mercedes Gullwing SLS – The legend is born again

Mercedes-Benz has finally released the official images and technical specification of its long awaited super car, the SLS Gullwing. Highly influenced by the legendary 300SL from 1950s, its modern day performance and retro design brings out the best of both worlds.
Mercedes has parted its company with their F1 partners ‘McLaren’ on this project, with whom they created the infamous Mercedes-McLaren SLR and have instead teamed up with AMG to create the SLS.
The 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds and top speed of an electronically limited 197mph is impressive. It uses an upgraded version of the 6.2 litre V8 engine used in new E63 which is built by AMG. The engine now produces 563bhp and 479lb/ft or 649nm of torque.
Information on the price-tag is not available at the moment but expect it to be at around £150-175k, that’s around half the SLR’s brand-new cost. The SLS is expected to compete against various GT and supercars such as Lamborghini Lp-560-4, Aston Martin DB-S as well as the new Ferrari 458 Italia and will make its debut in September 2009 at Frankfurt motor show.
